Geography
The Geography Department aims to provide pupils with a high quality education leading them to a thorough knowledge and understanding of man’s interaction with his environment; an appreciation of the issues arising and an acquisition of the skills necessary for pupils to carry out their own investigations.
To achieve this, pupils will be taught, guided and supported; offered a broad and balanced curriculum conforming to but exceeding the National requirements; and through appropriate resourcing ensure equality of opportunity for all.
Detailed objectives for age and ability groups:
It is the aim of the Department that all pupils shall acquire knowledge and understanding of places, processes and issues and develop a range of Geographical enquiry skills.
This will be enhanced by field work outside the classroom environment. For example pupils in Years 7 and 8 visited the Sefton Dune system and Years 10 and 11 conducted a river study in the Trough of Bowland.
The teaching methods employed should facilitate each pupil to maximize his/her own potential. In this way it is believed that each pupil will develop an interest in his/her surroundings and become a more informed and responsible citizen.
All pupils will be taught in mixed ability groups but the level of work will be differentiated according to ability. Candidates proceeding to GSCE level will be entered for AQA specification A at the tier appropriate to their ability.
Controlled Assessment is now a key element of the GCSE course accounting for 25% of the final result. The candidates from last academic year performed very successfully in this area and the files were commended by the moderator.
