ART AND DESIGN STUDIES

Art offers a unique vehicle for communication and self expression, encouraging the ability to observe, select and interpret with imagination, feeling and understanding.

The department intends to develop within all students self confidence and a positive approach to the subject through direct participation in the initial research and presentation of a theme. Students will be encouraged to develop an art based vocabulary and a greater awareness of historical contexts.

The department runs a skills based course.  This enables an exploration of different media and processes, materials and techniques, underpinned by contextual reference. Students do not need to be gifted in this area to do well. Good grades can be achieved by working hard and responding positively to advice and help.

The skills and qualifications that are gained in the department can form a sound basis for study at a higher level leading to a wide variety of career opportunities.

GCSE ART

The course followed by the department is AQA Art and Design. As the course progresses students are increasingly expected to refine their independent research skills with staff support and guidance.
