HISTORY
History is a very popular option in at Scarisbrick Hall College
Aims:
- To increase the pupils’ capacity to evaluate evidence from the past and encourage them to use historical sources critically
- To encourage pupils to undertake independent research using a variety of sources including the School’s VLE, Internet, libraries, oral History etc.
- To deploy a variety of methods including simulation, drama, role play, debates, mock trials etc. to promote active learning.
Independent Learning Tasks
Key Stage 3 pupils undertake various Independent Learning Tasks related to the course content. Pupils are encouraged to add their own sources to their work. Extension Work is also set for all, especially able pupils. This sometimes involves local History and Internet/Local sources.
Trips and Activities
The Department has organized trips to Museums such as the Maritime Museum in Liverpool and the Science Museum in Manchester.
Examination results
The GCSE results have been consistently excellent. Not only has a 100% A* – C success rate been maintained for many years but many pupils have attained the top grades of A and A* and continued with their studies at A/AS level. History GCSE is a very popular and successful option for pupils of all abilities.
Consistently excellent Coursework marks have been achieved with some pupils gaining full marks. Pupils are actively encourages to seek out their own resources and use their individual research. The History Moderator praised the ‘outstanding work of the pupils’. Popular revision courses have been offered to help pupils at Key Stage 4 over Easter and close to final assessments at the end of Year 11.
