Welcome to our Reception Class
‘A teacher takes a hand, opens a mind, and touches a heart’ however in order for teachers to do this ‘Every adult needs to teach a child; it’s the way adults learn.’
There is one fully qualified Teacher and one fully qualified Teaching Assistant within the Reception class, which enables a concentrated amount of time and nourishment for each child within the class.
The environment that the children learn in is welcoming, vibrant, and accessible to all children creating attainable challenges to ensure individual achievements.
Each day is filled with a variety of activities which use the vast range of facilities upon the school site. The children complete activities such as dance in the modern dance studio, music and movement within the beautiful and inspiring Great Hall and magical story times within the enchanting story telling tower.
The school day in Reception consists of phonic and number sessions, cursive writing practice, French and also focus sessions within each of the six Early Years curriculum areas. The children learn in two ways; through teacher lead topic lessons and also through a creatively enhanced classroom, which encourages independent investigation and an understanding of the topic. The children also enjoy many topic trips out of school using the great resource of school minibuses.
This term within Reception our topic is Holidays and we are investigating what a holiday is, where we may go, how we may get there and many more questions. We will complete activities such as making our own holiday map including a key due to our knowledge of shapes. We will use ICT toys to navigate each child’s map to encourage positional language. All of these activities will be individually differentiated and assessed which will influence the future planning for the class to extend and strengthen knowledge of each individual child.
Reception in the New Year …
Last term we are learning about Families.
During our Communication, Language and Literacy and daily Phonic lessons we have really enjoyed sounding out and writing CVC and high frequency words – especially on the Smart Board! We made a marvellous family poem when we had fun with rhyming words.
Mum makes us giggle when she calls us sugar plum.
Dad makes me happy when I am feeling sad.
Sister plays super games and we like to whisper.
Brother is so cool and kind I would like no other!
In our Problem Solving Reasoning and Number sessions we have really had great fun with the challenge of writing numbers onto an empty number line. We have used words like, ‘one more’ and ‘one less’ to move up and down the number line. We have been counting how many people there are in our family and completing sums using our number lines to help!
Within our Personal Social and Emotional Development we have had wonderful circle times talking about our family holidays and family days out. We have really liked reading about our class bears adventures with each family in Reception – Rupert the bear has had a fantastic time getting to know everyone each weekend!
Each week within Physical Development sessions we have learnt more skills and steps during our football and dance lessons in our gym and dance studio. We really love team games and scoring goals or remembering dance routines.
During our Knowledge and Understanding of the World sessions we loved learning about the world wide family celebrations for Chinese New Year! We made red and yellow lanterns! The First School went on a trip to New China City, Southport to get first hand experience of what the celebrations are like! We really had a great time watching the dance of the Chinese dragon! We had a super time during a Music and Movement session when we used instruments to make music for a dragon to dance to!
Through Creative Development sessions and by using lots of different resources, such as, paint, chalk, sand, glitter, crayon, pencil and many more we have really enjoyed discovering the way that ‘Family’ is written in Chinese. We have also had a great time drawing and painting our family pets and making family pictures.
We loved thinking about our pets so much that we even started to think about how we can take care of the wild animals in our family gardens! We had a wonderful time making bird feeders during our cookery time. We found out about lots of wild animals that we may see, bats, foxes, owls and rabbits and we loved hearing about the during special story times in the story telling tower.
This half term we are going to be continuing to think about Families. We are taking a very special trip to Formby, on our school minibuses, to see where a very special squirrel family lives!
