Year 3 Creative Curriculum

Year 3 study three different topics during the year. Where it is possible these incorporate Numeracy and Literacy. Aspects of these subjects are also taught as discrete learning as necessary.

Invaders or Settlers?

The Autumn Term sees us asking this question a number of times. We learn about the arrival of the Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings in Britain. We also learn about the legacy these peoples left behind – including a visit to IKEA!

Some time is spent experiencing the every day life of the Celts! We go on a foraging mission before we make and cook soup and oatcakes – eaten as part of our lunch! The adventure continues as we learn how to weave and also defend our village with swords and shields!

Boudicca is a favourite character and we consider the Roman invasion from her viewpoint and that of the Roman leader before re-enacting the battles of AD60.

A brief study of the Anglo-Saxons and especially the treasures that have been found allows us to become archaeologists – maybe even digging for treasure in the school grounds.

Then the Vikings arrive. They are often seen as unfriendly, vicious characters. You may be surprised to know that it is possible to Skype a Viking and spend time asking questions about life in Viking York. His answers may make you think differently about the Vikings and you will learn some interesting facts about how they made their boats watertight etc!

Spaceship Earth

We begin this mission on Planet Earth learning all about continents and oceans and the formation of the earth. Using the Interactive Whiteboard we investigate earthquakes and volcanoes. The earthquake drill, practised in many American schools is interesting and finds us underneath our tables! Then there is a chance to practise being a scientist investigating rocks and soils.

Eventually we are off into space. Do you know what the saying ‘once in a blue moon means’? – Year 3 do! We learn about the Solar System and what it is like on the different planets. We also ask the question “Is there anybody out there?” According to our newspaper reports there have been sightings of aliens at Scarisbrick Hall!

Detectives

In the Summer Term we find our magnifying glasses and away we go!

We are The Detectives.
We are History Detectives – looking at Scarisbrick Hall; Nature Detectives – making full use of our wonderful school grounds and Doorstep Detectives – investigating land use in the area.

The pupils use the IT facilities to produce their own children’s guide to the Scarisbrick Hall using their own text and uploaded photographs. They record their observations and finds relating to trees, birds, minibeasts etc in a ‘Detective Notebook’. Many of the local businesses are happy to welcome the class as they investigate the local area. Everyone enjoys the opportunity for an ice cream at the Marina!
