Welcome to Year 5
In Year 5 we cover a range of topics through the Creative Curriculum and include much of our Literacy work into our topics including: Victorian diary entries, confidential mission files for Secret Agents, river poetry and flood recounts.
Victorians
The Victorians topic in the first term builds up a timeline of dates and important events that changed and developed the Victorian times. We learn about Queen Victoria, family life, work, living conditions and inventions.
We go on Educational Visits to Southport as a Victorian seaside town and include a visit to the Botanic Gardens museum.
Quarry Bank Mill – Victorians at work. On this trip we also visit a Victorian school room and have a lesson Victorian style.
Manchester Police Museum – we visit the Victorian Police cells and look at artefacts from the time.
Victorian Christmas at Croxteth Hall – the children dress up for this and take on roles around the house as actors play the parts of all the members of a large Victorian estate.
Cool Stuff
Cool stuff is our second topic. In this topic we
learn about changes in technology and look at how this is developing all the time. We make and record our own adverts and pod casts. We look at different types of art including graffiti and pavement art.
We go on an Educational visit to: Manchester Science Museum.
Rivers, Coasts and Seas
Our final topic is all about Rivers, Coasts and Seas. In this topic we learn about how rivers begin and the features of rivers. We look at the growth of Liverpool as a port and emigration. When looking at coasts we edit a photograph to show how coastal erosion can change the appearance of the landscape.
We go on Educational visits to; River Alt – study of a local river, Maritime Museum – Liverpool its growth on the River Mersey and emigration, Coastal study – sand dunes and shorelines. During the topic we also have a visit from a Deep Sea Diver!
