Starting Reception at Scarisbrick Hall School

The first five years of a child's life are the most critical in their development. These early years lay the foundations for a child’s future health, happiness, growth, development and learning. Reception is a key transitional year, in which children complete the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) of their education and take their first real step on the school ladder. Here, we explain what age children start Reception at Scarisbrick Hall School and how you can apply for a Reception place for your child.

The first five years are critical for the development of a child's brain, with the first three years being the most important in terms of shaping the brain architecture. Early years experiences lay the groundwork for the brain's organisational development and functioning throughout life. As such, a child’s early years have a direct impact on how they develop their learning skills, as well their social and emotional intelligence.

Children learn more quickly during their early years than at any other time in life. This is why a nurturing and enriching environment is crucial to their long-term happiness, wellbeing and success. At Scarisbrick Hall School, we fully appreciate the importance of these early developmental stages and take our role as facilitators in this process extremely seriously – albeit with a keen sense of fun and adventure!

What age do children start Reception at Scarisbrick Hall School?

Reception is the first year of primary school in England and Wales. It comes straight after Nursery but before Year One and is the final part of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) of education. The EYFS sets the standards that school and childcare providers must meet for the learning, development and care of children from birth to five years old. Most children start school full-time in the September after their fourth birthday.

That means that they will turn five years old during their first school year. Therefore, if your child’s fourth birthday falls between 1 September 2021 and 31 August 2022, they will typically start school in September 2022.

First School at Scarisbrick Hall School

At Scarisbrick Hall School, Reception is part of our First School. This is the first step on your child’s journey through our wider school system, having either come through our nurturing Beautiful Beginnings Day Nursery and Pre School environment or newly joined us at this stage. Either way, they will enjoy an exceptional start to their school life, thanks to the enviable combination of highly dedicated staff and our enriching countryside settings.

Our two form entry at Reception allows more opportunity for children to experience team sports and performances. We also ensure that your child enjoys close supervision and tuition at all times, which not only supports their academic development but also allows them to build a close rapport with their teachers. First School pupils are also given the opportunity to experience a wealth of additional activities to enhance their learning, including a wide range of specialist sports clubs (like taekwondo and fencing) and performing arts.
