Food

Overview

In Food, Nutrition and Hospitality we strive to create learners who are confident, independent and knowledgeable. We study the science of food whilst also building the skills pupils can take with them and use beyond the classroom.

We encourage pupils to take risks with flavours and develop transferable skills in order to develop and tackle more challenging recipes. We encourage pupils to recognise and reflect on the strong link between Science and Food lessons. Students work independently and as teams contributing to the wider school community as opportunities arise.

Middle School

Pupils in Middle School all have the opportunity to receive a double lesson of Food in every Year group. This allows the pupils time to see recipes through from the mixing of ingredients to ensure the final product is finished. We introduce the basics of food preparation and hygiene and build throughout Middle School to more complex dishes. We encourage pupils to develop their creativity with both design and flavour, all whilst building their confidence when cooking in a range of styles.

College

Pupils in College have the opportunity to take the Level 1/2 Vocational Award in Hospitality and Catering. The aim of the course is for pupils to develop the knowledge and understanding related to a range of hospitality and catering providers; how they operate and what they have to take into account to be successful. There is the opportunity to learn about issues related to nutrition and food safety and how they affect successful hospitality and catering operations. Learners will also develop food preparation and cooking skills as well as transferable skills of problem solving, organisation and time management, planning and communication.

Beyond the Classroom

Beyond the classroom Food, Nutrition and Hospitality plays a major role in school life. Pupils from the College provide catering for a number of school functions, whilst there are many competitions pupils can take part in across the year. Food, Nutrition and Hospitality is also a key part of the schools wellbeing programme with each year group learning about healthy eating and looking at ways they can use food to improve their health and wellbeing. We hold the very highly contested annual cupcake competition for each group in Middle School. The pancake decoration competition is always popular and pupils are encouraged to share their work from lessons at home. Mrs Rowland, our Food, Nutrition and Hospitality teacher, regularly sends themed recipe packs home for both pupils and parents to enjoy.
